Officially, everything lasted only one week, from October 22 to 28, 1962. But behind the scenes the crisis lasted longer.
An American spy plane U-2, flying over Cuba, photographed 9 launch pads for atomic missiles under construction among mangoes and banana groves: what people continued to fondly call Isla Bonita was becoming a missile base a stone's throw from North America . But in that base there was only Cuban fruit in the background: the ramps were Soviet.
President Kennedy orders the American fleet to surround the island of Cuba and stop any Soviet ships with missiles on board. The danger of a third world war is imminent.
